Most of my work lives in the world of big water and powerful fish… but every once in a while something completely different swims into the studio.
Meet the axolotl — a real (and wonderfully strange) salamander known for its permanent smile and curious personality. It almost feels like he’s pressed right up against the glass, staring back at you, wondering who’s watching who.
This piece leans into playfulness and imagination. The bright color, soft textures, and direct eye contact make it feel less like a portrait and more like an encounter — the kind that makes kids laugh and adults stop for a second look.
After years of teaching art, I learned one thing quickly: kids already know and love axolotls. Painting this one was a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be serious to be meaningful — sometimes it just needs to make you smile.
