Most of my work celebrates power, motion, and the drama of the open water — fish that feel larger than life.

This painting came from a completely different place.

The axolotl is a real creature, a rare salamander native to Mexico, known for its permanent smile and almost mythical appearance. During my years teaching elementary art, I learned quickly that kids knew exactly what an axolotl was — long before I did. They loved them for their odd charm and gentle personality.

This was my first attempt at painting one.

Smaller in scale and lighter in spirit than my usual work, this piece was simply fun — a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be serious to be meaningful. Sometimes the studio needs curiosity, humor, and a little surprise.

Even here, the goal remains the same: to create a painting that makes people stop, smile, and start a conversation.
