Some fish don’t blend in—they glow. Squirrelfish are one of those species. Bright red, wide-eyed, and unmistakable, they spend most of their time tucked into the shadows of reefs and ledges, venturing out at night and occasionally peeking out during the day with that curious, watchful look that makes them so memorable to anyone who’s snorkeled or dived in tropical water.
 
I’ve always been fascinated by fish like this—small in real life, but visually larger than life. Most squirrelfish are only six to twelve inches long, but their color, texture, and character feel far bigger than their size. That’s what inspired me to paint this one at three feet long, giving it the scale and presence that matches its personality.
 
This painting is meant to bring that vivid energy into a space. From across the room, the intense reds and golds immediately catch your eye; up close, the layered scales, subtle shifts of color, and expressive features reveal themselves slowly. It’s a piece that adds warmth, color, and a sense of the reef to any room—especially for anyone who loves the ocean and the unexpected beauty found beneath the surface.
