Few fish in the ocean combine speed, grace, and spectacle the way an Atlantic sailfish does. With its towering dorsal fin, long bill, and electric blue coloring, it’s a fish that looks almost unreal in the water—built for speed and sudden bursts of power. Watching one appear behind a spread of baits is something offshore anglers never forget.
My connection to sailfish goes back to my time in Key West, working as a mate on a sportfishing boat called The Black Bean. The captain was always fishing for sailfish—whether the clients realized it or not—and during my short time aboard, we hooked and landed one. That experience taught me something most people don’t realize: landing a billfish is a team effort between the angler, the captain, and the mate. After the fish was released and we returned to the dock, I was also introduced to a long-standing tradition—the first time you catch a billfish, you get thrown overboard. I didn’t know it was coming. I hit the water in full gear, laughing, soaked, and officially initiated.
Painted at eight feet long, this piece carries the same sense of motion and presence as the fish itself. From across a large room, the sweeping lines and deep blues command attention; up close, the detail and subtle color shifts reveal the movement and elegance that make sailfish so captivating. It’s a true statement piece for someone who loves offshore fishing, the culture around it, and the stories that only happen far from shore.
