Often considered one of the most colorful freshwater fish in North America, males can light up with brilliant oranges, blues, greens, and turquoise—an astonishing amount of color packed into such a tiny fish.

I painted this one much larger than life to give this little fish the attention it deserves. Enlarged on the canvas, all those colors and patterns become impossible to miss, turning one of our smallest native sunfish into something bold, joyful, and completely unexpected.
