With their bold colors and unmistakable profile, hogfish have always stood apart on the reef. In the Florida Keys and Bahamas, they were often considered a prize catch—not just because they’re excellent to eat, but because they’re smart, elusive, and difficult to fool. More often than not, when a hogfish came over the rail, the mate and captain quietly claimed that fish for themselves. Everybody understood why.
 
I painted this piece to capture more than just the fish itself. I wanted to capture the feeling of seeing one glide over the reef in clear tropical water—flashes of pink, turquoise, gold, and blue shifting constantly in the sunlight. Up close, the layers of color and texture reveal themselves the same way the fish does underwater.
 
This painting brings a different kind of energy into a room—coastal, colorful, and full of character. For anyone who has spent time on the ocean, around reefs, or out on the boat with friends, it’s the kind of fish that instantly brings back memories and starts conversations.
